18 Dec 1911: O 4 is ordered.

15 June 1912: O 4 is laid down at the K.M. De Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen.

1913

5 Aug 1913: O 4 is launched.

The O 4 is the first Dutch submarine equipped with two retractable periscopes (stroke 1.5 m) and a passive sonar.

1914

??: Bergingsvaartuig is standby during the O 4 trials.

17 June 1914: O 4 is commissioned to the Royal Netherlands Navy.

17 Jun 1914 - 12 Dec 1916: O 4 is under the command of Ltz. II  / Ltz. I. .

31 Jul 1914: O 4 is 'ready for war'.

22 Dec 1914: Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands visits the O 4. This is the Queen's first submarine trip.

In Oct 2002 Marny Schonegevel Emanuel (daughter of ) writes: He always told the story of his brave Queen Wilhelmina who came on board the sub and, I believe, even took a short trip on her. He was very impressed at her extreme interest in all that she saw and had many questions about the mechanics of running a sub.
