18 Mar 1910: O 3 is ordered.

31 Dec 1910: O 3 is laid down at the K.M. De Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen.

1912

30 July 1912: O 3 is launched.

9 Oct - 4 Nov 1912: Bergingsvaartuig is standby during the O 3 trials.

1 Nov 1912: A battery explosion destroys 58 of the 60 battery cells, therefore the commissioning of O 3 is postponed.

1913

11 Feb 1913: O 3 is commissioned to the Royal Netherlands Navy.

11 Feb - 9 Sep 1913: O 3 is under the command of Ltz. II  .

9 Sep 1913 - 19 July 1916: O 3 is under the command of Ltz. II  .

World War I

The Netherlands is neutral.

O 3 is based at Vlissingen.

1914

31 Jul 1914: O 3 is 'ready for war'.

13 Sep 1914: Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands visits the O 3 in Den Helder. They sail off Den Helder and submerge as well.

Woody Emanuel reported: " . . . my (commander of the O 3) said  that just prior to the boarding by the Queen, the order, "Heads down!" was barked to the crew on board"
