K XVI expedition team needs to get more material | ||||

The Dutch Navy has concluded that the May expedition did not provide enough material for a positive identification of K XVI. As a matter of fact they even don't know whether the material is from a submarine or another type of vessel. Therefore the team will try to salvage the located anchor. They hope to retrieve it this year. ...more info on the expedition. | |||
Dutch Honor US Submarine In Cleveland | ||||

The Dutch navy has honoured an American submarine now docked in Cleveland as a floating museum. The U.S.S. Cod rescued 56 sailors on board a grounded Dutch submarine near the end of World War II in the South China Sea. Yesterday a Dutch naval officer presented a Dutch flag to the Cod. He says the Dutch navy and people are still grateful. | |||

On Saturday 14 July the Dolfijn (4), a Dutch submarine of the , has sustained damage to her port side rudder while she was submerged, at a depth of 30 meters, South-West of England, off the Scilly islands. None of the crew has been injured and the submarine is heading for Plymouth for further inspection. | |||

Dutch Navy examining K XVI material | ||||

From 9 - 20 May 2003 the
"Stichting Comité nabestaanden onderzeeboten 1940-1945" has held an
expedition to search for the K XVI.
This Dutch submarine was lost in the South China Sea on 25 Dec 1941. The team has provided the Dutch navy with video footage and photos which possibly shows parts/debris of the submarine. The navy will use small parts (visible in the footage), like a n anchor and chain, to find out if this is indeed the K XVI. ...more info on the expedition. |

50 crew members of the Walrus (2) received a medal for their contributions to operation "Enduring Freedom". From Sept to Dec 2002 the Walrus has been gathering intelligence off the Arabic Sea and the Persian Gulf. (in Nov 2002 Secretary pf State for Defence stated that the Walrus has been gathering information on the Iranian Navy, as requested by the USA). 2003 Defence Budget | The 'days at sea' stats for the Dutch
submarines as listed in the 2003 national budget is as follows: 2001: 465
days, 2002 expected: 200 days, and 430 days at sea are estimated for 2003. The estimated 200 days for 2002 seem a bit low since 280 days are listed for peace keeping missions alone. |
