Ardjoeno at the IJ river in Amsterdam, 1898. (Photo by M.G.G. Suyver, © erven M.G.G. Suyver). Please contact us if you know the names/class of the other vessels in this photo.
Caption updates: 20 Jan 2006 - Jan Klootwijk writes "...the ship at the port side of the Ardjoeno is the "pantserdek" ship Hr Ms Zeeland....".
21 Jan 2006 - G.D. Horneman writes ".....these ships are there because of the inauguration festivities (27 Aug 1898 - 9 Sept 1898) of Hr.Ms. Queen Wilhelmina. The following ships attended: "Pantserdek" ships Holland and Zeeland. "pantser" ships Evertsen and Piet Heijn. Torpedoboats Ardjoeno, Batok and Empong...."
23 Jan 2006 - Jan Klootwijk writes "...as to the white “pantserdek” ship in the distance: The Gelderland and Noord Brabant of this class have their hawse holes in a higher position. The bow decoration of the Utrecht, of the same class, is much longer. The nearest ship is already identified as the Zeeland. So of the six ships in this class the white ship in the distance could be either the Holland or the Friesland. With Horneman’s knowledge the white “pantserdek” ship in the distance is identified as the Holland. The torpedoboats attending the inauguration are according to Horneman the Ardjoeno, Batok and Empong. The separate characters of the name on the bow of the torpedoboat alongside the Holland are unreadable. But the length of the white stroke makes it unmistakable that this must be the Empong.(having Horneman's knowledge that it is either Empong or Batok!)
